What Students Need to Do

Students use honesty, kindness, respect, and self-control in classroom situations. They follow rules, value different customs, complete group jobs, and help others. They vote on class decisions and explain that citizens elect local and state representatives.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student chooses honest and respectful actions and explains how a rule helps the group. The student completes a team role, names ways jobs help others, and accepts voting results. The student can explain that citizens choose representatives by voting.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think honesty only matters when avoiding punishment, or that kindness is only for friends. They may think rules are meant to control people, and respecting differences means everyone must follow the same customs. They may think voting guarantees their choice will win, or that government leaders choose themselves.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of one child voting once and another taking two ballots. Ask students to circle the responsible citizen, explain the voting rule, and complete, “Citizens choose representatives by _____.”

   Build a block structure in teams, using job cards for builder, materials manager, encourager, and checker.

   Discuss: How can we be honest, kind, and respectful when a classmate’s family celebrates a different tradition?

   Play Rule and Reason Match by pairing picture cards of classroom rules with cards showing whom each rule helps.

   Hold a class vote on two read-aloud books, count ballots, then connect the process to citizens choosing local and state representatives.
