What Students Need to Do: Students take turns, listen, share materials, and complete an assigned part during a group task. They make simple choices together and help the group finish a shared product.
What Mastery Looks Like: In a small group, a student follows a role, uses polite words, and responds to classmates’ ideas. During a disagreement, the student suggests a fair solution or asks for help without leaving the task.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think teamwork means one person leads and does all the work, or that everyone must agree immediately. They may confuse being respectful with staying silent or focus only on their own part.
How to Assess It: Give groups of three paper shapes, glue, and one sheet of paper to make a community scene in six minutes. Check whether each student shares, takes turns, and contributes.

Lesson moves

Give groups 12 cups and assign a builder, materials manager, and encourager, then challenge them to build one tower together.
Describe a playground disagreement and ask, “What could each child say so the group can finish the game?”
Play Pass the Plan, where each child adds one block after listening to the group’s building idea.
Have groups sort ten classroom library books, decide on categories together, and share the sorting jobs.
