What Students Need to Do: Students use kind words, listen, take turns, follow agreed rules, and care for shared materials. They finish assigned work and make choices that help the class.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can work with others without interrupting, complete a classroom job, and handle materials carefully. The student can explain how one responsible choice helps others.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think respect means agreeing with everyone or that citizenship only applies to adults. They may also confuse hard work with finishing quickly or never asking for help.
How to Assess It: Give this exit prompt: “Draw or write one responsible choice you made today and tell how it helped someone else.”

Lesson moves

Have pairs sort picture cards showing helpful and unhelpful classroom choices, then explain where each card belongs.
Ask, “What should you do when a classmate has an idea you dislike?” Students draw and label a respectful response.
Play classroom charades with taking turns, completing a job, caring for supplies, listening, and helping others.
Ask students to observe a school worker, then name one way that person shows responsibility and helps the school community.
