What Students Need to Do: Students make fair, truthful, and respectful choices when working with others. They complete duties, keep commitments, care for shared spaces, and help solve group problems.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can choose a responsible action in a classroom or community situation and explain how it helps others. Their daily behavior matches the choices they describe.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think being civil means always agreeing or staying silent. They may also think citizenship is only for adults, or that honesty excuses rude comments.
How to Assess It: Give this exit prompt: “A classmate takes credit for your group’s work. What should you say or do, and why?”

Lesson moves

Give teams paper, tape, and scissors to build a tower while using assigned roles, shared materials, and a signed team agreement.
Discuss: Can you disagree respectfully, and what words would show it? Then have students write a two-sentence example.
Play a scenario sort where students label choice cards responsible or irresponsible, then earn a point by explaining each decision.
Create a classroom service checklist, such as returning library books or organizing supplies, and have students document one completed duty.
