What Students Need to Do: Students tell the truth about their choices and actions. They use caring words and actions with classmates and with themselves, even after a mistake.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student gives an honest account of what happened without blaming someone else. The student includes others, offers help, and uses calm self-talk after making an error.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think honesty means saying every thought, even when it hurts someone. They may also think one mistake makes them a bad person or that kindness only applies to friends.
How to Assess It: Read this prompt: “You spill the crayons and feel embarrassed. What could you say and do?” Ask students to draw and label an honest, caring response.

Lesson moves

Use puppets to act out a broken pencil problem, then have pairs practice truthful words, helpful actions, and kind self-talk.
Ask students to complete: “When I make a mistake, I can tell the truth and say this to myself: ___.”
Play a scenario sorting game where students place action cards under Honest, Kind, Both, or Neither.
Create a classroom lost-and-found plan that includes returning items, explaining where they were found, and thanking the person who helped.
