What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students tell the truth about their own words and actions. They use caring words and make safe, helpful choices for themselves and others.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name the honest choice in a simple situation and tell the truth after making a mistake. The student can show kindness with words, actions, and self-care.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think honesty means reporting every mistake another child makes. They may think kindness means always agreeing or giving someone what they want. Some confuse self-kindness with avoiding rules or hard tasks.

How to Assess It

Ask, “You knock over a classmate’s block tower and no one sees. What should you say and do?” Students may answer aloud or draw their response.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students sort picture cards into honest, dishonest, kind, and unkind choices, then act out a better choice for each problem card.

  2. Draw and label one honest choice and one kind choice you could make after spilling a classmate’s crayons.

  3. Play Choice Corners: read a scenario, then students move to Honest, Kind, Both, or Try Again signs and explain their choice.

  4. Keep a one-day kindness tally, marking each time students tell the truth, use kind words, or care for themselves.
