What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice that families may have different foods, celebrations, greetings, clothing, and routines. They listen, ask kind questions, and treat each person with respect.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can describe a difference without calling it strange or wrong. The student uses kind words, includes others, and shows interest without making assumptions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think unfamiliar customs are wrong or funny. They may assume everyone from the same group eats, dresses, or celebrates in the same way.
How to Assess It
- Read: “Mia brings a family food you have never seen.” Ask each student to draw or say one respectful response.

Ways to Teach It
Create a class tradition quilt by drawing one family food, celebration, greeting, or routine on each paper square.
Ask, “How can we learn about a classmate’s tradition without making fun of it or making assumptions?”
Play Kind Choice Match by pairing picture scenarios with respectful responses, such as listening, asking politely, or inviting someone to join.
Have students interview a family member about one custom, then share a drawing and one sentence about it.
