What Students Need to Do: Students recognize laws in familiar places and choose actions that follow them. They explain how these choices protect people and property.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name a law, describe the expected behavior, and explain why people should obey it. The student follows laws even without reminders.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse laws with classroom rules or personal preferences. They may think laws only matter when an adult or police officer is watching.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit prompt: “A crossing signal says stop, but no cars are coming. What should you do, and why?”

Lesson moves

Have pairs sort picture cards showing people obeying or breaking traffic, safety, and property laws, then explain each choice.
Ask students to write about what might happen if no one obeyed stop signs or wore seat belts.
Play Lawful Choice Charades, where students act out a situation and classmates identify the safe, lawful response.
Take a school walk to spot crosswalks, signs, and safety features, then discuss the laws connected to each one.
