What Students Need to Do: Students explain why laws help keep people safe and communities orderly. They identify responsible ways to obey laws made by local, state, and national governments.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can read a simple situation and choose an action that follows the law. They can explain how that choice protects people, property, or community order.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse classroom rules with laws. They may think every law comes from the president or that a law can be ignored when someone disagrees with it.
How to Assess It: Use this exit prompt: “A town law requires dogs to be on leashes in parks. What should a dog owner do, and why?”

Lesson moves

Place law scenario cards into three labeled hoops: local, state, and federal, then discuss the responsible action shown on each card.
Write a response to: “Why should people follow a law even when no police officer is watching?”
Play Lawful Choice, where teams draw scenario cards, choose between two actions, and explain which action follows the law.
Examine a local sign about pets, parking, or littering, then identify the law and the action residents should take.
