What Students Need to Do: Students listen without interrupting, use kind words, and allow others to make fair choices. They disagree without mocking, excluding, or pressuring someone to change a view.
What Mastery Looks Like: During a class discussion, a student can restate a classmate’s idea and respond politely. During group work, the student includes others and accepts different choices that do not harm anyone or break rules.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think respect means agreeing with everyone or never sharing their own view. They may also confuse a personal preference with a right, or think an unpopular opinion makes teasing acceptable.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “A classmate chooses a game you dislike. Write one respectful thing you could say and one respectful action you could take.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs classroom scenario cards to sort under respectful or disrespectful, then ask them to explain each choice.
Ask, “How can you disagree with a friend and still treat that person fairly?” Record two example responses.
Play Respectful Response Match by pairing disagreement cards with polite sentence starters such as “I see it differently because...”
During a class vote, have students listen to both choices, vote privately, and congratulate the group after the result.
