What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose something they want to learn and ask a simple question about it. With adult help, they gather facts from books, pictures, trusted adults, or other provided sources. They record and share what they learned through drawing, writing, or speaking.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can ask a focused question, point to a source that answers it, and name one or two relevant facts. The student can make a labeled drawing or dictate a sentence, then explain the finding to classmates.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may state what they already believe instead of reporting what a source shows. They may copy unrelated details, treat every picture as proof, or give an answer that does not match their question.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture-book page about frogs and ask, “What question could this page answer?” Have students draw or dictate one fact and share it aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Place shells, leaves, and feathers at tables; students choose one, ask a question, and find an answer in two picture books.
Prompt students, “What do you wonder about rain, and which picture or sentence could help answer your question?”
Play Fact Match: students pair question cards with picture cards, then explain how each picture gives an answer.
Check a weather forecast; students choose suitable recess clothing and draw the forecast fact that supports their choice.
