What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose something they want to learn about and ask a simple question. They gather information from pictures, books, or people, then record and share what they learned.
What Mastery Looks Like
- With teacher prompts, a student asks a clear question and finds a related fact in a picture, text, or conversation. The student records the fact and explains it to others.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give a comment instead of asking a question. They may record guesses or opinions as facts, or draw something unrelated to the source. Some think sharing means showing a picture without explaining what they learned.
How to Assess It
- Show a photo and short caption about penguins. Ask each student to state one question, draw or dictate one fact, and share it with a partner.

Ways to Teach It
Set out leaves, magnifiers, and plant books, then have students ask a question, observe, and draw one fact they discover.
After a read-aloud, ask, "What did you wonder, and what fact helped answer your question?" Record responses on a class chart.
Play Fact Finder Bingo using picture source cards, with students stating a fact before covering the matching topic square.
Invite the school nurse to answer student questions, then have each child draw one fact and share it with the class.
