What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a focused topic and ask questions they can answer through research. They find facts in books, websites, interviews, or provided sources and sort them into a chart. They explain what they learned in their own words through speaking, writing, or a visual.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use more than one source to answer a focused question. The student sorts notes into given categories, explains facts without copying, and tells where the information came from.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy full sentences instead of restating facts in their own words. They may ask questions that are too broad, mix unrelated facts, or forget which source provided each fact.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short sources about frogs and a chart labeled habitat, food, and life cycle. Ask them to write one fact in their own words, place it in the correct category, and name the source.

Ways to Teach It
Place fact cards from two animal sources around the room, then have pairs collect, paraphrase, and sort them into habitat, food, and survival charts.
After reading two weather texts, ask, “Which fact best answers our class question, and how would you say it in your own words?”
Play Research Relay: teams draw a question card, scan labeled sources, write one paraphrased fact, and place it under the correct category.
Have students interview the school nurse about staying healthy, record answers in a three-column chart, and create a tip poster for classmates.
