What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a useful source for a question and find the needed fact. They use headings, indexes, links, key words, or interview questions to reach the answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects a source likely to answer a question. The student uses text features or a focused interview question, records a relevant fact, and shows where it came from.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the first source without checking whether it matches the question. They may copy a nearby sentence that does not answer the question, or answer from memory. Some read every word instead of using headings, links, or key words.
How to Assess It
- Give students a one-page reference sheet titled “Beavers,” with headings for Habitat, Food, and Homes. Ask, “What do beavers eat?” Students write the answer and underline the words that prove it.

Ways to Teach It
Set up four fact-finding stations using a book, printed webpage, picture glossary, and classmate interview, with one question at each station.
Ask, “Which source would best explain how a firefighter stays safe, and why?” Students name the clue that guided their choice.
Play Source Hunt: teams draw a question card, choose from three sources, find the answer, and point to where they found it.
Use a school lunch menu and cafeteria worker interview to find what is served Friday and ask about one unfamiliar food.
