What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find useful information in websites, databases, digital media, books, and other available sources. They record source details and sort notes into clear groups tied to a research question.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students locate relevant information across different source types and record enough citation details to find each source again. They sort notes by question, claim, or subtopic and remove repeated or unrelated details.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy the first search result, treat all websites as equally reliable, or save links without recording useful details. They may also confuse organizing information with simply listing sources.

How to Assess It

Give students three short sources on one topic. Ask them to record one relevant fact from each in a labeled organizer and group the facts under two headings.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place printed articles, database excerpts, and web pages at stations, then have students sort evidence into labeled folders by subtopic.

  2. Ask students to explain which source they would use first for a school start-time report and why.

  3. Run a source-sorting relay where teams place evidence cards under claim, counterclaim, background, or irrelevant.

  4. Have students research a proposed school policy and build a shared spreadsheet with links, key facts, source types, and subtopics.
