What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students locate useful facts, examples, and viewpoints in several credible source types. They take clear notes, group evidence by question or subtopic, and track where each detail came from.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build an organized set of notes that answers a focused research question. The notes combine relevant evidence from multiple sources, use logical headings, and include enough citation information to find each source again.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a list of links as organized research or save every fact they find. They may group notes only by source, which hides connections across ideas. Copying full passages and losing citation details are also common errors.

How to Assess It

Give students three short source excerpts and two subtopic headings. Ask them to place each excerpt, paraphrase one useful detail, and record its source.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs printed source cards, folders labeled with subtopics, and sticky notes to sort evidence and explain two placement choices.

  2. Ask students to write which source adds the best evidence, which adds a different view, and what information is still missing.

  3. Run an evidence relay where teams match note cards to research questions, reject irrelevant cards, and earn points for accurate source labels.

  4. Have students create a one-page briefing on a school issue using the student handbook, a staff interview, and a local news report.
