What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students locate useful evidence in library databases, credible websites, and digital reference tools. They record source details and sort notes into categories tied to a research question.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects information that directly addresses the research question and records where each detail came from. Notes are grouped by clear topics, claims, or subtopics for later use.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a search result or AI summary as a source instead of opening the original material. They may copy long passages, lose source details, or organize notes by discovery order rather than by topic.

How to Assess It

Give students three digital source excerpts and a research question. Ask them to record two relevant notes, each source title, and a category for each note.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Print digital source cards and have students sort them into labeled folders based on which part of a research question each source addresses.

  2. Ask students to write: Which note-taking system best prevents lost sources and unrelated facts, and why?

  3. Run a research relay where teams find one relevant database source, record a usable note, and file it under the correct heading.

  4. Create a school policy brief using the school website, a news database, and a government page, with evidence organized by stakeholder.
