What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a research question into focused keywords and phrases. They use those terms to find useful facts in books, articles, databases, and websites.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student creates precise keyword combinations and adjusts them when results are too broad. They collect useful facts from both print and digital sources and explain how each fact fits the topic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may search with one broad word or type a full question without selecting key terms. They may choose the first result, copy unrelated facts, or use only websites.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: For “How do beavers change wetlands?” write two search phrases, then choose between a printed encyclopedia entry, a park webpage, a zoo menu, and a beaver novel.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a topic card, an encyclopedia, and two bookmarked sites; they build a keyword web and find one relevant fact in each format.
Ask, “Which search would work better for learning why monarch butterflies migrate, ‘butterflies’ or ‘monarch butterfly migration reasons,’ and why?”
Play Keyword Makeover: teams replace broad searches such as “weather” with precise terms, then earn points for useful results.
Have students research local recycling rules using a city webpage and a printed flyer, then list the information needed for home.
