What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a research question into focused keywords and phrases. They use those terms to find relevant facts in books, reference materials, databases, and websites.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students create focused search terms and revise them when results are too broad or narrow. They gather useful facts from print and digital sources and explain how each fact answers the research question.

Common Misconceptions

Students may type the whole research question instead of choosing focused keywords. They may select the first result, collect unrelated facts, or treat several websites as varied source types.

How to Assess It

Give students the question, “How do bees help gardens?” Ask them to write three search phrases and name one print and one digital source they would check.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out reference books and tablets, then have students find one fact with two keyword phrases and record each source.

  2. Ask students to compare “weather” with “how hurricanes form” and explain which search terms would produce more useful results.

  3. Play Keyword Makeover by giving teams broad searches to revise into focused phrases, then award points for relevant results.

  4. Have students research a class garden purchase using a catalog, a gardening book, and a store website, then recommend one plant.
