What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use headings, captions, indexes, menus, hyperlinks, and keywords to find specific information. They gather details from print and digital sources, then sort those details into useful categories.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a question, students choose a useful text feature or keyword and find an accurate answer quickly. They organize facts from print and digital sources into clear groups and explain their choices.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read an entire source instead of using headings, indexes, menus, or search fields. They may type full questions into a search field, trust the first result, or sort facts into unclear groups.

How to Assess It

Give students a nonfiction book and a webpage about the same topic. Ask them to find two assigned facts, sort them by category, and name the feature or tool they used.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a nonfiction book and printed webpage, then use sticky notes to mark the fastest route to three assigned facts.

  2. Ask students to write: Which feature saved you the most time, and how did it help you understand the topic?

  3. Play a timed source hunt where teams draw fact cards, choose an index, heading, hyperlink, or search term, then sort each answer.

  4. Use a school lunch menu and nutrition website to find and group information about ingredients, prices, and healthy choices.
