What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use headings, captions, sidebars, menus, keywords, and links to find specific facts quickly. They choose a useful feature instead of reading an entire source from start to finish.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students quickly select the feature or tool that best matches a question. They find the needed detail and explain how the feature helped them locate it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read every word instead of scanning headings, captions, sidebars, or links. They may click the first search result without checking whether it answers their question.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short webpage and ask, “Where would you look to find the date of the event fastest?” Have them name the feature and explain why.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed article, sticky notes, and a question card, then have them mark the feature that leads to the answer.
Ask students to write which feature they would use first to find a definition, location, date, or related fact.
Play a text feature scavenger hunt where teams earn points for finding requested facts in books, articles, and sample webpages.
Use the school website to find the lunch menu, an event date, and a staff email, then name each tool used.
