What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use headings, captions, indexes, hyperlinks, menus, and keyword searches to locate details in print and online sources. They judge which features and results are most useful for understanding a topic.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can choose effective keywords, scan results, and move to the most relevant page or section. The student can compare sources and explain how a feature clarified or added information.

Common Misconceptions

Students may accept the first search result, type vague keywords, or overlook captions and sidebars. They may assume a polished layout makes information accurate.

How to Assess It

Give students a textbook page and a short website on the same topic. Ask them to find one fact in each and explain which feature or tool helped most.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place print articles around the room and have students use sticky notes to label features that help them locate or understand information.

  2. Ask pairs to discuss which is more useful for finding one fact, an index, a heading, or a keyword search, and explain why.

  3. Play Keyword Challenge by giving teams a research question and awarding points for the shortest search phrase that produces relevant results.

  4. Have students compare a school event flyer with the event webpage and decide which source answers specific questions faster.
