What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find details that answer a question about one topic. They gather useful facts from pictures, short passages, interviews, or teacher-selected materials.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name the topic and record two or more related facts. The student can point to the picture, text, or person that provided each fact.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose interesting details that do not match the topic. They may treat guesses or opinions as facts, or overlook information shown in pictures.

How to Assess It

Give students a picture and short passage about frogs. Ask them to draw or write two frog facts and mark where each fact was found.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place animal photos and fact cards around the room, then have students collect three facts on sticky notes.

  2. Ask, "Which detail best teaches us about penguins?" Have students draw or write their choice and explain why.

  3. Play Fact Finder Bingo, where students cover squares by finding details about a topic in short texts and pictures.

  4. Have students interview the school nurse about healthy habits, then record two facts to share with the class.
