What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a table of contents, index, headings, search box, or prepared interview questions to find answers to a focused question. They jot keywords and short phrases, then label each note with where it came from.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a question and several sources, a student selects relevant facts without copying whole passages. The notes are brief, accurate, grouped by question, and labeled with a title, website name, source number, or interviewee.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy full sentences instead of using short phrases. They may record interesting facts that do not answer the question, or forget to label where each note came from.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article and web page printout about how frogs survive winter. Ask them to write three brief notes answering the question and label each note with its source.

Ways to Teach It
Set up source stations with an encyclopedia, printed article, safe website, and recorded interview; students find one fact and cite its station.
Ask, “Which details answer our question, and which are just interesting?” Students defend one choice using evidence from a short passage.
Play “Note or Copy”: teams sort cards into brief notes, copied sentences, and unrelated details, then revise one weak card.
Students interview the cafeteria manager about reducing food waste, record three short notes, and label the speaker and interview date.
