What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a topic and ask useful questions about it. They find facts in books, digital sources, interviews, or provided materials. They organize notes, record sources, use their own words, and share what they learned.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can write focused questions, gather useful details from two sources, and sort notes into labeled categories. The student explains findings in original words and identifies each source.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask questions that are too broad or unrelated to the topic. They may copy whole sentences or think changing one word counts as paraphrasing. They may also mix facts with opinions or forget to record where each fact came from.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph about bees and a chart labeled Food, Home, and Jobs. Ask them to write one research question, paraphrase one fact in the correct category, and record the source title.

Ways to Teach It
Set up three source stations about frogs; students collect one fact at each, then sort sticky notes into habitat, food, and life cycle.
Ask, “What would you need to learn before choosing a class pet?” Students write three research questions and name a source for each.
Play Fact Sort: teams match fact cards to category headings, rewrite one fact in their own words, and name its source.
Research tomorrow’s weather using a forecast page, then make a chart showing temperature, rain chance, and one recommendation for recess.
