What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask a focused question about a teacher-chosen topic. With support, they find facts in pictures, short texts, interviews, or other provided sources. They sort facts in a simple organizer, record them with words or drawings, and share them aloud.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can turn curiosity into a relevant question and choose information that answers it. The student records accurate facts in labeled spaces and explains one finding to classmates.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may offer opinions instead of questions, or copy an interesting detail that does not answer their question. They may overlook facts in pictures, misplace facts on a chart, or present a guess as a fact.
How to Assess It
- Give students a bee photo and a short bee paragraph. Ask them to write one question, record two matching facts in a chart, and share one fact aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Set out animal photos and short fact cards, then have pairs sort facts into a three-column habitat chart.
After reading about frogs, ask, "What do you still wonder?" and help students write one research question.
Play Fact Finder by giving teams a question and having them locate matching facts in picture books.
Study the school lunch menu, ask where one food comes from, and record facts from a package label or cafeteria worker.
