What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find simple facts in a read-aloud, picture, video, or classroom source. They record what they learned with a labeled drawing, a written sentence, or words dictated to an adult.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can record two accurate details that answer the class research question. The picture, labels, writing, or dictation clearly match the source and stay on topic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw something they imagine instead of information from the source. They may record an opinion as a fact or copy words without understanding them. Some think spelling must be perfect before they can share what they learned.
How to Assess It
- Read aloud: “Penguins are birds. They cannot fly. They use flippers to swim.” Ask students to record two facts using drawing, writing, or dictation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two animal books and sticky notes; they mark one fact, then make a labeled drawing showing it.
After a frog read-aloud, ask students what they learned and which page helped them, then record one class fact.
Play Fact Match by pairing picture cards with fact cards, then have students choose one pair to record.
Research a classroom plant, then create care cards showing one fact about its need for water, light, or soil.
