What Students Need to Do

Students choose and combine words, images, audio, video, and data to communicate a clear idea. They track information presented at the same time and decide what supports, distracts, or conflicts. They adjust media choices for different audiences and goals.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students create a focused message in which words, visuals, audio, and data work together. They explain their choices, identify conflicting information, and adjust the message for a named audience and purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume that adding more images, sounds, or text always improves a message. They may repeat identical information across modes, miss contradictions between sources, or ignore the needs of a specific audience.

How to Assess It

Show a slide with narration, a graph, and a photo. Ask students to name one useful connection, one distraction, and one change for a younger audience.

   Have pairs create a 60-second school safety message using three images, recorded narration, captions, and one data point.

   Ask students to explain which part of a news clip carries the main claim and which visual or sound most changes its meaning.

   Play a media sorting game where teams label each element as support, repetition, distraction, or contradiction.

   Compare a weather alert on television, radio, and social media, then redesign one version for families with limited internet access.
