4.C.3 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students plan a presentation around a clear message, then choose words, images, audio, video, or gestures that work together. They organize each part so the media adds information or emphasis instead of decoration.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can create and deliver a clear presentation using at least two modes, such as spoken explanation and labeled diagrams. Each mode supports the main idea, and the sequence is easy to follow.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add random pictures or sounds that do not support the message. They may read every word from a slide or crowd slides with text. They may also use several modes that repeat the same information instead of adding meaning.

How to Assess It

Create one slide explaining how rain becomes runoff. Include a labeled visual, write two sentences to say aloud, and identify what the visual explains better than the words.

   Give pairs a short animal article, chart paper, and markers, then have them build a poster and rehearse a 60-second explanation that adds details.

   Ask, "What does the image communicate that the speaker's words do not?" Students cite one example and suggest one revision.

   Play Match the Message: teams pair narration cards with visuals, reject weak matches, and explain how each pair strengthens one main idea.

   Have students create a weather safety announcement using a spoken warning, a map, and symbols for a school morning broadcast.
