What Students Need to Do

Students plan a message for a named audience and purpose, then combine words with images, audio, video, or gestures. They organize claims and evidence so the audience can follow the message from beginning to end.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student chooses images, words, audio, video, or gestures that help a specific audience understand the message. The final product states a clear claim, presents relevant evidence in order, and ends with a fitting conclusion or action.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add pictures or music only for decoration, even when those choices distract from the message. They may also mix audiences, bury the claim, or present evidence in an order that is hard to follow.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Create three slides for incoming sixth graders that make a claim about a helpful school routine. Use an image and written text, include one supporting fact, and sequence the slides clearly.

   Give pairs a claim, four fact cards, and three images; have them build a poster and deliver a 30-second explanation.

   Show two versions of a school announcement and ask, “Which choices fit students, families, or staff, and why?”
