What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose and arrange words, images, audio, video, or gestures to fit a clear presentation goal. They combine multiple modes so each adds meaning instead of repeating or distracting.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create a focused presentation with a clear purpose and logical organization. Their words, visuals, sounds, or gestures work together, and they can explain why each choice fits the audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add images or sound only for decoration, even when those choices distract from the message. They may repeat identical information in every mode or choose content that does not fit the audience or purpose.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Create a one-slide message persuading classmates to conserve water, using a headline and an image. Add one sentence explaining how each choice supports persuasion.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed headlines, photos, captions, and icons, then have them build a poster for a chosen purpose and justify every piece.
Compare two school event slides and write which one informs more clearly, citing the placement, wording, and image choice.
Play Purpose Match: teams pair audience and purpose cards with media elements, then earn points by explaining each match.
Students redesign a confusing cafeteria sign using clear words, an icon, and color, then test it with another class.
