What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine words, images, audio, video, or live delivery to communicate one clear message. They adjust evidence, tone, design, and format for a named audience and goal. They share the finished work in an appropriate public or classroom setting.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects media because each element adds meaning. The final product uses readable design, credible evidence, and a tone suited to its audience. The student publishes or presents it smoothly and explains the choices made.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add images, music, or animation only for decoration. They may use the same tone and evidence for every audience. Some read slides word for word instead of using media to support their delivery.

How to Assess It

Ask students to create one slide and a 45-second pitch requesting a new student resource from the school board. Require one image, one data point, and an explanation of one design choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students turn a short editorial into a 60-second video using a storyboard, voice-over, captions, and three purposeful images.

  2. Compare two ads for the same product, then write which design and language choices fit each intended audience.

  3. Play audience switch: teams revise one slide for teenagers, parents, or local officials, then classmates guess the assigned audience.

  4. Create and publish a digital public service announcement about a school issue for the morning news or class website.
