What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan and present ideas using speech, visuals, audio, demonstrations, or digital media that fit a clear purpose and audience. They present alone and with others, while giving the audience a meaningful role.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students create a clear presentation in which speech, media, and audience participation support the same purpose. They manage time, share team roles, cite sources, and respond clearly to questions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat decorative slides or random videos as meaningful media. They may read crowded slides, use uncited sources, or call a final question period audience interaction.

How to Assess It

In pairs, have students deliver a 90-second explanation of a school issue using one visual and one audience question. Check clarity, media use, participation, and audience fit.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Groups turn a short editorial into a three-minute briefing using one prop, one data visual, and a live audience poll.

  2. Students write how they would change the same presentation for elementary students, families, and a school board.

  3. Teams draw audience, purpose, and media cards, then plan and deliver a one-minute presentation matching all three.

  4. Students pitch a school improvement idea to a mock principal using survey data, a visual, and structured audience feedback.
