What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match images, charts, audio, or video to a clear message and audience. They put ideas in a logical order and explain how each media choice helps the audience understand.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can build a focused presentation with a clear opening, connected points, and a closing. Visuals and media add useful information instead of repeating or distracting from the message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may crowd slides with long paragraphs, tiny text, or too many effects. They may choose pictures, sounds, or videos for decoration rather than to clarify a point. They may also present ideas in an order that is hard to follow.
How to Assess It
- Create a three-slide presentation that teaches classmates how to prepare for a fire drill. Include one labeled visual and one audio or video element, then explain each choice in one sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups index cards, printed photos, chart samples, and audio QR codes to storyboard a four-slide presentation about a class novel.
Show two sample slides and ask, “Which choices help the audience understand, and which choices distract?”
Play Media Match: teams pair topic cards with useful visuals or media, then defend each match in ten seconds.
Have students create a one-minute school weather report using a forecast map, temperature chart, and one recorded sound clip.
