What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine words with visuals, audio, video, or data displays so each mode contributes meaning. They explain their choices and revise modes that are decorative, repetitive, or confusing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose formats that fit the purpose and audience. They coordinate text, visuals, sound, or movement so each mode adds distinct information and the full message is clear.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think adding more media automatically improves a message. They often use decorative images, repeat identical information across modes, or choose music and graphics that conflict with the intended tone.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Create one slide arguing for or against later school start times. Include a labeled graphic, a 40-word narration script, and one sentence explaining how they work together.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs an infographic, sticky notes, and an audio recorder, then have them add narration that explains meaning the graphic cannot show alone.
Compare two short public service videos, then discuss which visual, spoken, and musical choices shape each message most effectively.
Play Match the Message by having teams pair narration cards with image cards, then defend or revise combinations that create a clear meaning.
Create a school safety announcement using a map, brief written directions, and recorded audio, with each mode providing different needed information.
