What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work with peers to plan and build presentation content for a clear topic, audience, and purpose. They listen, share decisions, and combine tools such as slides, charts, images, audio, or video.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students help their group choose slides, charts, images, audio, or video because each choice fits the message and audience. They build clear content, credit sources, and revise choices after peer feedback.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often add images for decoration or fill slides with text that repeats the speaker. They may choose a familiar app before deciding the purpose and audience. Some overlook captions, source credits, accessibility, or how each group member’s contribution fits the final presentation.
How to Assess It
- Give groups a topic, audience, and purpose. In eight minutes, they must choose two media formats, sketch one slide, and explain how each choice helps the audience.

Ways to Teach It
In teams, turn a one-page article into three slides using one chart, one image, brief source captions, and assigned group roles.
Ask groups to justify each media choice: What does it clarify, and how does it serve the presentation’s purpose?
Run a media-match game where students pair audience and purpose cards with the best chart, image, audio clip, or quotation.
Have students design a two-minute school board pitch that combines local data, a photo, and spoken commentary.
