What Students Need to Do

Students combine at least two modes, such as speech, text, images, video, or gesture, to communicate a clear claim. They choose and arrange evidence for a specific audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students create a focused message that fits the intended audience. Each image, spoken point, and written detail supports the claim, while evidence follows a clear sequence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add images only as decoration or repeat the same information in every mode. They may overload slides with text, use weak evidence, or present ideas in a confusing order.

How to Assess It

Ask students to create three slides persuading the principal to add one lunch option. Require a claim, one relevant fact, and one image that supports the message.

   Give groups printed claim, evidence, caption, and image cards to arrange into a logical poster for a named audience.

   Ask students to explain which mode would best persuade parents, classmates, or administrators about the same school issue and why.

   Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claims with facts and images, then remove any item that does not strengthen the message.
