What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students follow information arriving through speech, images, text, data, or sound at the same time. They decide how the channels support, extend, or conflict, then combine useful details in a response.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student identifies the main message while accurately recording details from at least two channels. The student explains what each channel adds, spots contradictions, and uses combined evidence to answer a question or make a decision.

Common Misconceptions

Students may focus only on narration and ignore graphs, captions, tone, or images. They may assume every channel repeats the same message, or list details without explaining how they connect or conflict.

How to Assess It

Show a 60-second news clip with narration, captions, and a graph. Ask: "What is the main claim, which two channels support it, and where do they differ?"

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a video, transcript, and infographic, then have them mark where each source confirms, adds to, or conflicts with another.

  2. Write: Which channel shaped your understanding most, and what would change if it were removed?

  3. Play Signal Sort: teams earn points by matching details to audio, text, image, or data and explaining each connection.

  4. Compare a weather alert across television, a phone notification, and a radar map, then choose the safest action and justify it.
