What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students track spoken words, images, text, data, and sound presented at the same time. They decide what each source adds, then combine the useful details into one understanding.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify what each stream contributes and explain how the parts support, extend, or contradict one another. They combine the relevant details into a clear conclusion or response.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may focus on the speaker and ignore captions, graphics, or background sounds. They may assume every stream repeats the same message or miss places where sources conflict.
How to Assess It
- Show a 60-second weather report with narration and a map. Ask students to name one fact from each stream and write a conclusion that uses both.

Ways to Teach It
Play a short news clip, then have students sort details onto cards labeled speech, image, text, and sound.
Ask students to write: Which information stream changed your understanding most, and what detail caused that change?
Run a clip-analysis relay where teams earn points by identifying unique, repeated, and conflicting details across audio, captions, and graphics.
Examine a live weather report and decide how maps, spoken forecasts, alerts, and scrolling text guide a viewer’s plans.
