What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan, draft, revise, and edit multi-paragraph narratives, explanations, arguments, and reading responses for a clear audience and purpose. They organize ideas around a focused thesis or central idea. They use evidence, transitions, precise language, varied sentences, and a fitting conclusion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose a structure that fits the task, sustain one focus, and connect each paragraph to the thesis. The student uses relevant evidence, explains it clearly, and revises for flow, sentence variety, conventions, tone, and audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often insert evidence without explaining how it supports the thesis or central idea. They may treat revising as fixing spelling only. They may shift tense, repeat transitions, or force every piece into the same structure.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write one paragraph answering, “How does the main character respond to conflict?” Include a claim, one text detail, reasoning, a transition, and a conclusion.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups color-coded strips from an explanatory article, then have them arrange the thesis, details, transitions, and conclusion and defend the order.
Ask students to retell a scene from a minor character’s view, then discuss how word choice and time shifts shape the new version.
Run an evidence match game where teams pair claims with source details and earn a point only after stating clear reasoning.
Have students write a proposal to the principal about a school issue, using survey results, a credible source, and a specific solution.
