What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students reread their own work and a peer’s work to find errors in conventions and organization. They make accurate corrections and explain why each change is needed.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students find and correct errors in their own drafts and a classmate’s draft. They explain corrections using clear terms such as fragment, comma error, paragraph break, or verb agreement.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat editing as rewriting ideas instead of fixing errors. They may trust spell-check, overlook sentence fragments, or mark a peer’s error without explaining the correction.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph containing six editing errors. Ask them to correct each error and label the reason for each change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed paragraph, colored pencils, and an editing key to mark spelling, punctuation, sentence, and paragraph errors.

  2. Ask students to explain which editing change most improved a draft and why the original wording was incorrect or unclear.

  3. Run an editing relay where teams correct one error at a time, then justify each change before earning a point.

  4. Have students edit a mock email to a principal, checking that its sentences, paragraphs, punctuation, and word choices fit a formal audience.
