What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread their own drafts and a classmate’s draft to find errors that make the writing unclear or incorrect. They make focused corrections and explain useful edits respectfully.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find and correct errors without changing the writer’s meaning or voice. They can explain why a correction is needed and give a peer clear, respectful feedback.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat peer editing as rewriting someone else’s ideas or simply saying the draft looks good. They may correct spelling while missing run-ons, fragments, missing paragraph breaks, or informal usage. They may also assume a grammar checker catches every error.
How to Assess It
- Give students a six-sentence draft containing eight editing errors. Ask them to mark each correction and explain one change involving sentence structure.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed paragraph and colored pencils to mark capitals, punctuation, spelling, sentence boundaries, and paragraph breaks in separate colors.
Ask students to write: Which single edit most improves this draft, and why? Then compare answers with a partner.
Run an editing relay where teams correct one error at a time in a projected paragraph and name the rule used.
Have students edit a sample school announcement before it is posted, checking that every sentence is clear, correct, and easy to read.
