What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students reread their own drafts and a classmate’s draft to find errors that make the writing unclear or incorrect. They make focused corrections and explain useful edits respectfully.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students find and correct errors without changing the writer’s meaning or voice. They can explain why a correction is needed and give a peer clear, respectful feedback.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat peer editing as rewriting someone else’s ideas or simply saying the draft looks good. They may correct spelling while missing run-ons, fragments, missing paragraph breaks, or informal usage. They may also assume a grammar checker catches every error.

How to Assess It

Give students a six-sentence draft containing eight editing errors. Ask them to mark each correction and explain one change involving sentence structure.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed paragraph and colored pencils to mark capitals, punctuation, spelling, sentence boundaries, and paragraph breaks in separate colors.

  2. Ask students to write: Which single edit most improves this draft, and why? Then compare answers with a partner.

  3. Run an editing relay where teams correct one error at a time in a projected paragraph and name the rule used.

  4. Have students edit a sample school announcement before it is posted, checking that every sentence is clear, correct, and easy to read.
