What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose transitions that show how ideas relate within and across paragraphs. They revise drafts so shifts in topic, time, cause, contrast, or example are clear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use varied transitions that match relationships such as contrast, cause, sequence, and addition. Their paragraphs connect logically, and readers can follow each shift without confusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add transitions randomly or rely on the same words, such as “also” and “however.” They may choose a transition that does not match the relationship between ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short paragraphs with the transition removed. Ask them to add one transition and explain whether it shows contrast, cause, sequence, or addition.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips from two paragraphs, then have them arrange the ideas and insert transition cards where relationships change.
Ask students to compare two paragraphs and explain which transition best signals the shift between them.
Play Transition Match by pairing idea cards with transition cards labeled contrast, cause, sequence, example, or addition.
Examine transitions in a news article, then rewrite one paragraph using different transitions without changing its meaning.
