What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect claims, evidence, and explanations so readers can follow the logic. They choose precise transitions and vary sentence patterns to control flow, emphasis, and tone.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The writing moves clearly from one idea to the next within and between paragraphs. Transitions show accurate relationships, and varied sentence patterns support the intended tone and emphasis.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add transitions mechanically, even when the relationship between ideas is unclear. They may also mistake sentence length for sentence variety or repeat one pattern throughout.
How to Assess It
- Give students two loosely connected paragraphs. Ask them to revise the opening and closing sentences, adding one precise transition and varying one sentence pattern.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips from two paragraphs and have them arrange, connect, and justify the clearest sequence.
Ask students to explain how however, therefore, and for example change the relationship between the same two claims.
Play Transition Swap by replacing weak transitions in sample paragraphs, then checking whether each replacement preserves the intended meaning.
Compare a college application essay and a workplace email, noting how sentence patterns and transitions fit each audience and purpose.
