What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build clear paragraphs by linking sentences and ideas with accurate transition words. They add prepositional phrases to vary sentence patterns and clarify time, place, or direction.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose transitions that clearly show sequence, contrast, cause, or addition. They use prepositional phrases to vary sentence openings and connect details without creating fragments.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add transitions that do not match the relationship between ideas. They may repeat “first,” “next,” and “then,” or mistake a prepositional phrase for a complete sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give students four related sentences and ask them to form a paragraph using two accurate transitions and one prepositional phrase. Have them underline each addition.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips, transition cards, and prepositional phrase cards, then have them build and read a connected paragraph.
Ask students to revise a repetitive paragraph and explain how each added phrase shows the relationship between ideas.
Play Transition Match, where students pair sentence cards with transition cards and earn points by explaining each choice.
Have students write directions for reaching the cafeteria, using transitions and prepositional phrases such as “after lunch” and “beside the office.”
