What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write connected paragraphs that guide readers from one idea to the next. They use transitions and prepositional phrases to show order, time, place, or relationships and to vary sentence openings.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can revise a paragraph by replacing repeated sentence openings and adding accurate transitions and prepositional phrases. The revised paragraph reads smoothly and keeps ideas in a clear order.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add transitions randomly or use words such as “however” when they mean “next.” They may mistake any sentence opener for a prepositional phrase or write a prepositional phrase as a fragment.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Revise “The class planted seeds. We watered them. The sprouts appeared. We measured them.” Add two transitions and two prepositional phrases, then underline each.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips, transition cards, and prepositional phrase cards; students arrange them into one clear paragraph and read it aloud.

  2. Write about a surprising school day, then explain which transitions show sequence and which prepositional phrases add time or place.

  3. Play Paragraph Repair: teams replace repeated sentence openings and misplaced transitions in a short paragraph, earning one point for each clear revision.

  4. Study directions for a board game, then rewrite one step using a transition and another using a prepositional phrase.
