What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize ideas across several paragraphs and choose transitions that show how those ideas connect. They revise weak or repeated transitions so shifts are clear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose transitions that accurately show contrast, cause, sequence, examples, or added information. They vary transition words and phrases while keeping connections between paragraphs clear.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often begin every paragraph with “first,” “next,” or “finally,” even when ideas are not in time order. They may treat transitions as interchangeable or add too many, making the writing sound forced.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Join these ideas with a transition and name the relationship: The team practiced daily. It lost the championship game.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups paragraph strips and transition cards, then have them build a logical passage and explain each choice.
Ask students to write two paragraphs comparing homework policies, using one transition for contrast and one for added information.
Play Transition Swap: pairs replace repeated transitions in a short passage without changing the relationships among ideas.
Annotate transitions in a news article, then discuss how each one guides readers through claims, evidence, and shifts in focus.
