What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take a clear position on an issue and support it with focused claims. They choose relevant evidence, explain the connection, and organize related points together.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a focused position and builds it with distinct claims, specific evidence, and explanations. Related points appear together in a clear, purposeful order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without explaining how they support the position. They may repeat the same reason, use weak evidence, or place ideas in an order that is hard to follow.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Should students have homework on weekends?” Write a position, two reasons, one supporting detail for each, and group related ideas.

Ways to Teach It
Give students claim, evidence, and reasoning cards to sort into paragraph groups, then label each group with its main reason.
Ask, “Should phones be allowed during lunch?” Students write a position and defend it with two reasons and relevant evidence.
Play Evidence Match, where teams pair evidence cards with claims and earn a point only after explaining the connection.
Students write a letter to the principal proposing one school change, using survey results, school rules, or observations as evidence.
