What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take a clear position on a topic, text, or media message. They organize related reasons together, add relevant evidence, and explain how each detail supports their position.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student states a specific, debatable claim. Each paragraph focuses on one reason, uses relevant facts, examples, or quotations, and explains how the evidence supports the claim.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat personal opinions, repeated claims, or popular ideas as evidence. They may mix unrelated reasons in one paragraph or include facts without explaining how those facts support the position.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Using today’s text or media example, write one claim, two distinct reasons, and one supporting detail for each reason.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups claim, reason, and evidence cards from a sample article, then have them sort the cards into paragraphs and remove irrelevant evidence.
Ask students to write: Should schools limit homework, and which two reasons would best persuade a principal?
Play an evidence relay where teams match evidence cards to reasons, then earn a point by explaining each connection.
Have students annotate a social media advertisement, identify its claim and evidence, then write whether the message is convincing and why.
