What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take a clear position on a topic, text, or media message. They support it with relevant facts and reasons, then group related ideas in a logical order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a focused position and supports it with relevant facts and reasons. Ideas are grouped in a logical order, and each detail clearly connects to the position.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may state an opinion without giving facts or reasons. They may list unrelated evidence, repeat the same point, or confuse emotional language with reliable support.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Should schools limit advertisements aimed at children? State your position and support it with two reasons and one fact.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups claim, reason, fact, and unrelated-detail cards to sort, then ask them to build the strongest argument.
Show a cereal advertisement and ask, “Who is the audience, what does the ad want, and is its message convincing?”
Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claim cards with the strongest fact or reason card and explain each choice.
Have students write a letter to the principal proposing one realistic school change, supported by survey results and two clear reasons.
